Dromoland Castle is so close to Shannon Airport that some guests wonder whether a transfer is worth booking at all. It is about fifteen minutes by road. Surely you can just grab a taxi?
Sometimes you can. This guide covers the short run from Shannon to Dromoland, when pre-booking makes sense, and what to know if Dromoland is your base for a wedding or a golf trip.
It is one of the shortest airport-to-hotel transfers in the country, which is a big part of why Dromoland is so popular with visitors flying into Shannon.
If there are one or two of you, you have normal luggage and you are landing at a sensible hour, the taxi rank outside arrivals will usually do the job. A fifteen-minute journey does not need much planning.
A pre-booked transfer earns its keep in a few situations:
Dromoland is one of the best-known wedding venues in Ireland, and a lot of guests fly in through Shannon. The usual approach is to group arrivals by flight and send a vehicle for each group, rather than leave guests to sort themselves out.
A Mercedes V-Class takes up to six passengers. A 16-seat Mercedes Sprinter can bring in a full flight's worth of guests in one trip. Our guide to organising wedding guest transport covers how to plan it.
Because it is so central, Dromoland works well as a base for exploring the Midwest. Adare Manor is about 47km away, a little under 40 minutes in normal traffic, and guests often split a trip between the two estates. Lahinch, Doonbeg and the Cliffs of Moher are all within reach for a day out with a driver.
If you are travelling on to Adare Manor, our Shannon to Adare Manor guide has the details for that leg.
Dowling Executive Travel runs private transfers between Shannon Airport, Dromoland Castle and the rest of the Midwest, from a Mercedes V-Class for couples and families to a 16-seat Sprinter for wedding parties and golf groups.
